Alder Creek Farm has a well developed market garden and specializes in strawberries, sweet onions and unique varieties of garlic. New beds are being opened all the time. This year we are doubling our strawberry plantings to 2000. We sell our produce at the Saturday Market in Ganges. Guests are welcome to enjoy all the in-season fresh organic produce during their stay.

The end of July and the beginning of August is when the garden really
starts to produce. We are harvesting potatoes, beans, artichokes, zucchini,
tomatoes, shallots, onions, garlic, broccoli, beets, rutabagas, strawberries and
still some lettuce. The cool and wet June, not unusual in this part of the world,
delayed some crops but now the in the heat of full summer all is forgotten.
Beans and zucchini should be checked every day as they go from perfect to
over-ripe in a very short time. We
dug in three yards of sheep manure in the kitchen garden this spring and it
really shows. In the upper fields where the 100 foot rows of strawberries grow
we are still relying on the bounty of nature as this ground had never been
tilled before we broke the soil. A soil analysis showed that all nutrients were
available in sufficient quantities. As a result this field has never been
fertilized with anything. Of course we use no pesticides or other chemical
products. These strawberries are truly "organic and natural". Of course you
can't just take from the soil and give nothing back. Next year we will start a 4
year rotation of cover crops and perhaps free run chickens. Water for
irrigation is a problem at this time of the year. We have to be careful with
water use as our well does not produce unlimited quantities. We use drip and
soaker hoses to minimise wasted water. We also water in the evening and during
the night to reduce evaporation.
