We’ve had a cool
June and early July, but now the sun is shining. In keeping with the old adage “Make hay while the sun shines,” we
are out getting in our first hay crop. (Isn’t it interesting how many folk
sayings come from farming? “Don’t count
your chickens before they hatch.” “Cream always rises to the top.” “You can
lead a horse to water, but....”) The strawberries we planted are day-neutral,
which means that they ripen over a longer period of time than the June-bearing
strawberries, which ripen all at the same time--in June, of course. We are now selling berries, garlic (and some
veggies) at the Tuesday Farmers Market in Ganges, and as they come in more
heavily, perhaps at the Saturday market as well. In our “spare time” we are
continuing to build fences and plan for a barn.
Big news on the
farm—we have a new puppy. Roxy is a 12
week old female, half German Shepherd, half Golden Retriever. She’s a sweet-natured dog, with a lot of
spirit. (She NEVER is allowed to go in
the B&B suite...no animals have
ever been in the suite.)
We
have a pair of large red-tailed hawks hanging about right now, the deer are
browsing happily, and the woodpeckers are finding out that the very early
apples are almost ripe. Peas ripened
and are now frozen for next winter. We
enjoyed the first two ripe tomatoes yesterday (Early Girls), we’re eating lots
of lettuce and broccoli and the first tender zucchinis. The flower bed in front of the suite is
flourishing with sweet peas, snapdragons, lavatera, rudbeckia, zinnias and a
few volunteer sunflowers from the bird feeder! This is such a bountiful time of
year, and we revel in the warmth and
beauty.
