Spring is almost here on Salt Spring Island! The late February-early March weather has been outstanding over the past few weeks and things have really started to grow. At Alder Creek Farm, the fruit trees are about to bloom, and the alders and maples are starting to leaf out. We actually had to mow the grass in the orchard on March 10th. Recently, normal March weather has returned in the form of a cold rain but you can feel spring just around the corner. We’ve started vegetable and flower seedlings indoors, and are slowly moving them out to the greenhouse. We’ve been clearing small trees from the upper field with the tractor, burning the slash, and getting ready to cut hay here for the first time this summer. The final spring project, before the gardens demand all our attention is the new deer fence around the front orchard and gardens and the planting of five new apple trees.
