The swans in Fulford Harbour were beautiful
this winter. And so was the snow!
We are still enjoying our winter vegetables. Carrots, parsnips,
beets, Brussels sprouts and cabbage store very nicely in the
earth in which they grew. Some of our greens – chard,
lettuce, and mache (also called corn salad) -- have survived
the winter happily under their protective cloche.
Our winter and early spring projects include pruning the
fruit trees, installing deer fencing, and starting vegetable
and flower seeds for the summer gardens. Our strawberry plants
have been ordered, and we are preparing their beds. The ravens
have been calling, and the eagles are very active right now.
Our neighbor has had 8 lambs born, and the longer days tell
us spring is on its way. Alder Creek Farm has a herd of 14
deer whose ancestors decided years ago to make their home
on this acreage. We delight in their beauty, grace, tameness
and gentleness – but we match their strong desire for
our flowers and vegetables with diligent attention to protective
fences!
